English Language Timetable

English is essential for life. A good pass in English Language is required by many jobs and college courses. It is a key that opens doors. Our exciting and interesting English Language course will challenge you to think, develop your key skills in reading, writing, talking and listening and prepare you for the world beyond school.

Learning on Demand English Language is scheduled for every Wednesday, 10:20am to 11:00am and 11:20am to 12:00pm

KEY STAGE 4 - YEAR 10 - ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Week 1

Course introduction

Reading skills and first writing task Understand the main ideas a writer is communicating Summarise the key points of a text

Week 2

Approaching unseen texts

Identify what is meant by: - voice - language choice - imagery - appeal to the senses - speech and thought - techniques for purpose, e.g. persuade, inform - sentence length and varying structure

Week 3

Vocab starter 1-10

Effective annotation Develop annotation skills, focusing on writer’s use of language and structure.

Week 4

Word classes

Transactional Writing – Purpose, Audience, Form Examine a range of transactional writing tasks, and learn more about the text types.

Week 5

Vocab starter 11-20

Transactional Writing – Tone and register Adapt form, tone and register for specific audiences/purposes.

Week 6

Vocab 21-30

Stereotypes Consider stereotypes; what they are, why they occur and the impact they have.

Week 7

Transactional writing- Persuasive Speeches

Identify effective rhetorical techniques. Consider different ways to appeal to an audience.

Week 8

Transactional writing- Magazine articles

Comment on how writers make texts appropriate for their audience and purpose

Week 9

Comma splices & fact / opinion / bias

Comma splices Identify examples of comma splicing and suggest ways to correct them. Fact/opinion/bias Identify ways in which the writer conveys his own opinion (bias).

Week 10

Active / passive voice & between a rock and a hard place

Active/Passive Voice Identify active and passive voice, and the effect of each Between a Rock and a Hard Place Explore context of a piece of non-fiction.

Week 11

Chinese Cinderella - Context

Consider characters and themes in Chinese Cinderella.

Week 12

Explode a quotation

H is for Hawk- Context and themes Explore context and themes of a text

Week 13

Vocab starter 31-39

Zephaniah- Background and poetry Examine a poet’s writing style

Double Award Science

Our Biology course will enable pupils to acquire knowledge and understanding of biological facts, terminology, concepts, principles and practical techniques that are considered essential for future progression in higher education that requires knowledge of Biology.
