About this course

German (year 9 only)

Our course

The English national curriculum for modern foreign languages is based on the fundamental belief that children should be able to communicate for a real purpose in the chosen foreign language. Our curriculum model and teaching methods incorporate a range of approaches used throughout the courses of study to achieve this.

Learning a foreign language is a wonderful way to encounter and understand other cultures. Our MFL courses are structured to support and enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. We provide opportunities for students to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language.

  • Practical skills in the target language
  • A stimulating and enjoyable language experience
  • Attainable targets for pupils of all levels of ability
  • A range of learning styles for collaborative group work and individual work
  • An understanding and appreciation of foreign cultures
  • Skills and positive attitudes towards the further study of languages
  • Our KS3 courses provide the foundation for learning further languages.

This course helps students to: –

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • Speak with growing confidence and find ways of communicating through discussion and asking questions
  • Write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied

Student progress is measured by both formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments take place regularly and in a variety of formats ranging from group discussions, speaking, writing, quizzes, and presentations. Students complete one summative assessment each half-term in which they are required to demonstrate their skills across at least two of the four key skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing.
